A Lutheran Chapel was built in the early 1870s (see picture below) near the intersection of Mountain
Highway and Stud Road. Other denominations held services in the chapel before
erecting their own buildings. The first Anglican services in Bayswater were conducted
in the Lutheran Chapel in the late 1890's. In 1908 St Stephen's Church of England was
built in High Street and was dedicated in November. In 1923 the disused Lutheran Chapel
was moved to the St Stephen's site in High Street to become the church hall. The
Lutheran Chapel bell, imported from Germany in 1888, was also donated to St Stephen's
Church.
In 1974 St Stephen's Church was moved to Warruga Avenue and Phyllis Street corner to serve
a new residential area. Buildings comprising a church, narthex, hall and vicarage were erected.
The new church was dedicated on the 28th November 1978. the original church buildings, no
longer needed for services, was deconsecrated and named Kleinert Hall after Bayswater pioneering
family, who were members of the Lutheran and then Anglican church. In 2004 the Chapel was rededicated
to St Laurence and is used for monthly celebrations of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer mass.
